5 Tips for Writing Your Own Spells
So, you want to write your own spells, huh? I don’t blame you. Some of the traditional processes are obtuse and, frankly, confusing. Just know, you can write your own spells in accordance to traditional spell systems, like ceremonial Magick. But, you can create your own Chaos Magick spells. And don’t get stuck on the details. This should be an easy process and not something to get worked up about.
Either way, here are 5 tips for you to start writing your own spells.
Tip 1: Understand What Magick Actually Is and What It Can Be Used For
While this entry may not be the most practical of tips, it is the most important.
I have written many times on my website about my personal definition of Magick, which is “using your energy to make your subconscious into reality”. While the definition may change in wording from here to there, it is generally the same idea.
For example, you will not be able to bend reality into causing sandstone to be worth as much as gold. This is pure fantasy, although I wish it weren’t because there is a sandstone quarry near my home. When you write your own spells, be mindful of your goals here. Do you want a new romantic partner? That is doable. Do you want a promotion at work? Also doable. Do you want to grow 8 arms, turn your skin blue, and announce the coming of the Kali Yuga? I’ll let you figure out if you can do that last one.
Before I move on, I do not want to downplay the effect that Magick can have on your life. Sure, you can’t shoot bunny rabbits out of your armpits with the snap of your finger, but you can do so much more. Magick is responsible for so many miracles and wonders in our world. I am a living example of that very thing. I used to be a corporate hamster stuck on a wheel I never thought I’d get off of. Now, I am a full-time Witch that gets the privilege of performing complex spells and rituals every single day.
Magick is all about individual power. And as an individual, it is up to you to use that power to make yourself and the world better. The spells you write should reflect that very goal.
Tip 2: Decide If You Want to Use Totems or Tools In Your Spell
Most spells I have guides to on the blog here at mysticmagicks.com have totems and tools used in them. Some more experienced Witches may wonder why I do this, which is understandable.
I implement the use of tools and totems because it gives new Witches and practitioners something to hold onto—something tangible. It is helpful because you have a step-by-step process you can go by that can resemble an arts and crafts project. Personally, in my more complex spells, I eschew these things, but there are certain tools like crystals and candles that go along with every spell.
Of course, it is up to you to write your own spell however you desire. You can go the Chaos Magick route and throw out any kind of tools or totems from your process. But, if you are new, I’d recommend sticking with them for the time being. It gives you a place to point your energy and make you feel like you are consciously doing something rather than using the power of the mind.
You may also want to do some research on what kind of tools you need for your spell. For example, you wouldn’t use a carnelian crystal to contact Enochian Angels. You would go rose quartz every time. Conversely, you wouldn’t try to contact a Demon using Hoodoo powder. These are obvious examples, but I think the point is made.
Tip 3: Write It Out
When I used to teach how to cast spells, this is the tip I always got the most resistance from. I’m not sure if people have grown so tired of writing from their school days or if they’re afraid of specificity. (And people are afraid of specificity when they don’t really know what they want; remember that.)
Either way, it is important. I have guides for every single spell I do on a regular basis. For example, I have over 500 spells on Bonanza (and I have more than quadruple that in my spell book). For each of them, I have written a detailed guide for myself on every single one of them. While most of them can be done from memory at this point, I still look over them just to make sure I do not miss a single thing.
Writing is articulating your thoughts in an ordered manner. To me, writing is a form of Magick. It is making thoughts into a form in the real world. Write out your intention, which I have a guide for HERE. Write out everything you are going to do in your ritual. If you are new to writing your own spells, it should be as detailed as possible. And I mean that—write out everything down to the word! As you get used to casting and ritualizing, you can start to fly by the seat of your pants more. But, if this is your first spell, please do yourself the favor of writing it out.
Tip 4: Decide on the Time
The timing of your spells is important. And this is for two reasons.
The first is the timing of the outside world. While you will mostly be able to cast about any spell at any time of the year, some spells can get a boost from certain seasons or star patterns. For example, Lunar Spells are best done at full or new moons, depending on the mechanism of action. Motivational spells are best done in Spring. And Black Magick gets a little boost in Winter. Also, say you’re a Pisces; certain spells, like manipulation and love spells, are best done when the earth is in your star sign. Again, these are the ideal times for your spells, but you can make them work at any time if your intention and energy is strong enough.
The other reason is the state of your inside world. Our brains go through different phases throughout the day. Gamma Waves, for example, are more prominent in the morning after we wake up, which makes it the perfect time for a meditation session. Gamma Waves are the type of brain wave that corresponds more to insight and spirituality, so if you want to cast a spell for raising your own consciousness, the morning is the best time.
Another example is when your brain produces Alpha Waves. These occur mostly in late evening and correspond with relaxation. It is here when you’d want to do a ritual for stress reduction.
There are also other factors to consider, like hunger, emotional state, and spiritual connectedness. Wealth spells are best done when hungry. Revenge Magick is best done at the emotional peak. And spirit communication is best done when you feel the most connected to your inner energy.
So, decide when you should cast your own spell to give it that extra oomph.
Tip 5: A Good Incantation is Always Helpful
An incantation is a carefully chosen assortment of words that can give a spell energy. Sometimes, they even rhyme like poetry.
A well-known example from Scottish Witches used to protect livestock:
"I set the watch tonight
Against the horns of a he-goat
So we may avoid the hunger blight”
Obviously, it will be rare that most Witches will use this incantation anymore, but some of you out there may. Anyway, you can write your own incantations to chant while using your spell. For example, you can write an incantation for that love spell you have been cooking up. Just make sure you keep your goal in mind as you write it.
Incantations are, possibly, the oldest form of Magick aside from prayer (although incantations may be an audible form of prayer). And, they don’t have to rhyme. The reason most do is because it gives a musical rhythm to your incantation, which makes it easier to remember and speak.
Eventually, I will write a blog post that has a guide for writing a simple spell, but I wanted to get the tips out first. I hope it helps you Witches out there!
