5 Things You Need to Know About Being a Witch

You’re here, aren’t you? And you’re ready? Okay, let’s get to Witchery.

Being a Witch is not always it is cracked up to be. Not to discourage you, but we’re not flying around on brooms and cackling at poor, displaced doe-eyed Dorothy. We also don’t have command of flying monkeys, which is something that I think we should all bring up at the next meeting.

I want an army of those.

All that aside, being a Witch can be whatever you want it to be. Taking it seriously will put you in a place where ritual will be what takes up most of your practice. It is similar to detective work. Most of their time is spent sitting at a desk or in their car. If you’re doing it right, it might seem boring to some.

But, if you’re drawn to the practice or have Magick in your blood (or both), you will find fulfillment in it. So, I put together a list of 5 things to consider before going all in on that Witch life.

Number 5: Start With a Question

What is it that makes you want to be a Witch? What kind of practice do you want to do? Is this a phase in your life or will you keep the practice?

These three questions are a good place to start. And if it is just a phase, great! Phases are great for expanding our horizons. And if you find witchcraft isn’t for you, that is perfectly fine. Just know, if you ever return you will be welcomed back with open arms.

Have an idea of what your destination is before you start your journey. You may end up in a completely different place. Trust me, I know my fair share of “White Witches” who end up doing Black Magick within a week. Follow where you’re drawn toward. If you change your mind, do not be afraid to pivot.

There are few rules here. And to the people who try to give me rules, go practice your own way. I got mine.

So, form a question. And seek to answer it. By the time you answer it, you should have another question and another journey to go on.

Number 4: You’re Going Back to School

If you want to be a witch worth her salt, you are going to be doing some reading. Of course, I’m here if anyone has any questions, but most of the questions you have will only be answerable by you. And that’s a great thing!

The answers to your unique questions will be found. And only you will be able to find them. Everyone has their own version of witchcraft. You need to find yours.

You will be emulating others at first, but you will find your Witch’s voice. For me, I started with deep and complex ceremonial Magick. And I practiced that way for years. I had to learn the rules before I broke them. Now, I would be classified more as an Alexandrian Witch. But, even then, I don’t really fit into that category.

Find what works for you. Educate yourself as much as you can. I mean it. Don’t approach Magick without reverence.

Number 3: Become Familiar With Your Tools

You wouldn’t send a 3-year old onto a construction site with a jackhammer, would you? Right, you would not. Unless you are particularly cruel.

Know what you’re working with. Familiarize yourself with the tools of the Witch trade.

Imagine that you want to start with crystals. Learn their uses, how they interact with one another, and how not to use them. There are infinite resources online for learning these things. Once you get a handle, start experimenting and see what works best with you.

This goes for everything. Divination mirrors, crystal balls, energy grids—have an idea of what you are doing before you do it. You do not have to become an expert in Blessed Thistle before you incorporate it into your practice. Learn what it does and move to the next thing. Or, at least, have a handy guide somewhere near.

It will all become automatic with enough practice.

Number 2: Be Active In Your Magick

I think I explain this about fifty times a day. People think Magick just happens and you sit back and enjoy the good life.

Nope. That is not how it works.

You must be active within your Magick. This is also known as creating channels. You must create a path for the Magick to travel in your life. Say you cast a luck spell. You cannot remain in the exact same place in your life and expect Magick to happen. You have to put yourself in a position where the good luck can take effect.

The same goes for love spells. If you cast a love spell and expect someone to just pop into your life, you are sorely mistaken. A love spell will bolster your efforts when you look for love. It will not cause someone to instantaneously love you.

This rule applies to every single kind of spell there is: Wish Magick, Revenge Magick—everything!

Take my life for instance. I cast spells all the time so that I can affect people positively every day. I have a ritual that I do every morning upon waking at 4:15 AM sharp. I do it, then I try my best to make it work. And, for the most part, I do affect positive change in the people that I work with.

Be active in your process. That will allow the Magick to work.

Number 1: Have a Sense of Humor for Goodness Sake!

Not everything is going to go right in your practice. Every ritual will not be a success, especially right away. And there will be days where you feel zero Magick in your life.

Good. Without those times, you would not know what it felt like when things went right.

Hopefully, you will be able to laugh at yourself when you get down about being a Witch. And do that as much as you can. Humor is a big part of my practice. I was never a goofy person until I became a Witch. It showed me the absurdity in life. And don’t get me wrong, it also showed me the absolute serious in life, too.

Be able to laugh and not take everything seriously. We all make mistakes. No Witch is perfect. And you are not going to be the first perfect Witch.

You have a sense of humor. Use it. Feel the joy in Magick and in your life. Even if you think you’re miserable, there is something you can find to laugh at. You can laugh at Magick and still revere it. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Now, we all just need to find out how to get a hold of that flying-monkey army. I got somebody I want to use them on.

Love + Blessings
