Beginner’s Guide: Simple Sigil Magick

You want to work with sigils? Proceed at your own risk.

WHAT ARE SIGILS?

Sigils are designs that represent a certain idea or goal. Think of any symbol that recurs in your life. Company logos, paper money, book covers—all of them are sigils, or symbols, that represent what someone wants them to represent.

The word “sigil” is latin and means: sign, mark, or seal. It originates from the 15th century, although, if you have ever picked up a history book then you know sigils date back to the beginnings of civilization. Maybe even before…

Sigils are also a form of Chaos Magick. I don’t have time to get deep into Chaos Magick in this post (it’ll have to have it’s own dedicated blog post), but know that it can be dangerous. Chaos Magick is unpredictable. When performed the wrong way, you will see things around you devolve.

So, why are you making a blog post for BEGINNERS to use Chaos Magick sigils?

I believe that everyone can go down any path they want. I do not believe in gatekeeping. If you would like to try it, you can use this simple guide. But, please, do your research to see if this is something you actually want to try.

DO YOU NEED SPECIAL TOOLS TO CREATE A SIGIL?

No.

It is that simple. If you have a paper and pencil, you can do it. A lot of “fancy-britches” Witches like to say, “Oh, you should use charcoal,” or “You need to make a wax stamp to utilize a true sigil.”

Neither are true. Chaos Magick was made so that the common man could access Magick. Don’t let anyone keep you from any path you want to proceed down.

WHAT CAN BE A SIGIL?

It is very easy. You can make any symbol represent anything you want. If you want to draw a piece of pizza as your sigil, feel free.

Just know, the more complex meaning you can put into your sigil, the more power it will hold. It is a symbol of your desire. So, a pizza may not be the best symbol for, say, desiring someone to fall in love with you. You can also go in another direction and use a simple “heart” as a sigil. Sure, that represents love, but the heart symbol ❤️ has lost a bit of its meaning over the years.

My suggestion is to make your own, unique sigil that represents your specific desire. Like I said, feel free to use the classic symbols, but know that you are not tapping into true sigil power.

HOW DO YOU MAKE A SIGIL?

I’m going to show you the classic method of sigil creation. Remember, this is a beginner’s guide. There are MANY more ways to make sigils. If you are starting off, use this method. It is difficult to mess up.

You can make a sigil from a simple sentence like this: “I want to make $10,000 more dollars than I did last year.”

Now, take all the vowels and punctuation out of the sentence: “wnttmk10000mrdllrsthnddlstr.”

This takes the preconceived meaning from the sentence. Without an apparent meaning, something becomes a symbol. And that symbol’s power is held fast within your mind and spirit.

With “wnttmk10000mrdllrsthnddlstr” written out, you can then take out all the double letters and numbers, so it will look like this: “wntmk10rdlsth.”

This is easier to work with. Using these letters (wntmk10rdlsth), you can now make a design for your sigil. You may stretch the characters, shrink them, flip them, or move them however you want. By the end, it should look like an organized mess. And only YOU should know its meaning.

Now that your sigil is made, what’s next?

FIRING YOUR SIGIL AND FORGETTING ABOUT IT

You do not have to fire your sigil, but I do recommend it. It gives more meaning to your sigil. And, you will be imprinted more by the process.

So, light it up! Burn your sigil SAFELY wherever you desire. I burn mine in a metal bowl on my altar, but you can do it outside to keep everything safe. This process will imbue your ritual with fire. Fire is an energetic element. Use it for your own benefit.

If you don’t fire your sigil, dump it, flush it, or trash it. You should not see or think of it again after this process. Of course, that is not possible right away. And as you do it more, you will get better at this step.

Once you’re done, go on with your life. Try to get the thing you did the sigil for. Take action in your Magick. In the example, I used I mentioned making $10,000 more dollars than I did last year. If this were my sigil, then I would need to work at that. Once you are being active in your Magick, you should slowly be forgetting about your sigil.

And, if you did it right, when you get the result you were after, you will recall the simple ritual that got you there.
