5 MOST Common Dreams & Their Interpretations
Dreams. Something that sounds so simple can be very complicated. Likely, you have had at least one variation of one of these dreams. So, you must be wondering what that means, right?
Dream 1: Being Chased
This one is pretty self-explanatory. In “chase” dreams, you dream that someone, or something, is chasing you. This could be through the woods, through the city, or through your own home. While geography does have its own meaning, for this one we will be focusing on the symbolism of being chased, not the environment in which the chasing is happening.
What it means: Being chased in a dream usually means that you feel pursued by someone that you do not want to pursue you. This could be from an unwanted romantic interest, a clingy friend, or an overbearing parent.
It can also mean that you feel “chased” by your own desires. To put it simply, you could be focusing too much time on something that does not have meaning to you, therefore you feel like the thing is chasing you more than you are chasing it. For example, you could feel like moving up in your career is society’s expectation of you when, really, you are fine where you are.
Dream 2: Being/Feeling Lost
In these kinds of dreams, you may feel like you are dropped somewhere without any sense of where to go. Again, geography plays a big part here, but we will be focusing on the feeling of being “lost” or lacking direction. A little side-note: this was the most common recurring dream I had when I was younger.
What it means: Being lost in a dream can be taken very literally. And humans are literal creatures. Sometimes, these dreams can signify that you are “lost” in life. You may not have an idea of what to do with your time. Or, you may not feel driven toward a particular thing that society has told you that you should be; whether that is a romantic relationship, a career, or even something as simple as your taste in music.
In my experience, these dreams meant that I was not following my path. In my younger days, which I wasted by the way, I strayed from my path so much that I had the feeling of being lost in my waking life. It carried over from my dreams into my life and then back into my dreams. It was a constant feeling that I finally shook once I began practicing.
Dream 3: Falling
How many times have you been jolted awake by this dream? Or, maybe, it was just the feeling of falling.
This one is very common among young people who exit high school and enter the workforce or go into college. You could be falling through the void, the sky, or down a hole. Either way, it basically means the same thing.
What it means: Falling means that you feel overwhelmed by your waking life. In fact, this is the type of dream that the most scientific studies have been done on because it affects so many college students. And, college students are the most likely to participate in studies because they live in colleges, which is where studies are done.
If you have this type of dream, you probably feel overwhelmed by your weight in life. You haven’t had time to build up to the amount of stress you now carry. So, you metaphorically collapse, or “fall”, underneath the new weight on your shoulders. If you have this kind of dream, consider shedding some of that weight, whether it is quitting that new, horrible job or lightening your study load. And if you are an old-timer like me and still get these dreams, maybe take a vacation. It’ll do wonders, trust me.
Dream 4: Death
This is a dark one, isn’t it.
In this kind of dream you may experience your own death or someone else’s. Primarily, for this entry, I will be speaking to the experience of your own death. These kind of dreams can be traumatizing. And can feel like nightmares. To me, there is no difference in dreams and nightmares, but to each their own.
What it means: Experiencing your own death inside a dream can feel terrible. And, that’s right; it should. Having this kind of dreams means that you need to die. I know what you are thinking, but that’s not what I mean. I mean die metaphorically.
There are parts of us that we no longer need that we hold onto far past their expiration date. I call this being the perpetual child. I’m sure there’s a science-y name for it, but I’m a Witch. When you feel your own death in a dream, something about you needs to die. For example, my son used to collect toys. And there’s nothing wrong with collecting toys, but when you get into your twenties… maybe something is holding you back into your idealized childhood.
He needed to deal with some stuff, so I helped him. It is a little personal, but just know that he thought his childhood was a little too good and he always wanted to go back to that. The truth was, he had an average childhood. And, like most young adults, he missed the freedom he had when he was twelve versus the restrictions on his life when he was twenty. The child in him had to die so the adult could emerge.
While he still has some of those toys, or action figure collectibles as he used to call them, he has moved past their collection. Mainly, they are now a trophy to what he overcame in life.
Dream 5: Nakedness
We’ve all had this one, right? While Witches have less of a problem with the natural body than most, we still don’t go to Whole Foods in the nude, do we? It might be fun as long as no kids are around.
In these dreams, we are usually at school or at work and we look down and see we have no clothes on. I used to have this dream about the school bus a lot. I used to get picked on and I had to act tough on the school bus, so it will make sense in a moment why I had it about the bus.
What it means: Having dreams about being naked in public means that you have been busy concealing something about yourself to other people. For me, I was concealing my vulnerability on the school bus. For you, you may be concealing your sweetness to your co-workers or your intelligence from your classmates.
We all hide behind masks. That’s what social media is all about, right? Nietzsche was the first to articulate this, but he certainly won’t be the last. True spirituality is about causing that mask to look the same as your face. Then, it won’t matter if you pull it off or wear it. When you have dreams about being naked, you are ashamed of who you are on the inside. Don’t be. And I know some cannot help it, but do whatever you can so that your metaphorical nakedness does not make you uncomfortable.
Once you do that, then you can practice going naked in public. We gotta do a little at a time, Witches 😉
