Are You Spiritually Sensitive?
Who is Spiritually Sensitive?
If you have spoken to me online, at some point the topic of spiritual sensitivity has likely come up. I will be be honest here, I am sometimes blamed for others’ lack of sensitivity. It used to bother me, but now I approach it differently. Some people, a select few, just have trouble experiencing the wonders of the spiritual world. So, I wanted to write this blog post to help some of you understand what this term means and how it can affect your practice.
For the most part, everyone is born with an innate sensitivity to the spiritual world. We can feel things outside of ourselves, like spirits or beings watching over us. Everyone feels that at one point in their lives. I believe spiritual sensitivity exists on a spectrum; and everyone sits on that spectrum somewhere.
Above is a bell curve, or a normal distribution graph. These are applied to things that exist on an average continuum within human beings. Bell curves are used to represent distributions of wealth, IQ levels, book sales, and more. And, based on my work over 30 years, it also applies to sensitivity of the spiritual.
The average point of spiritual sensitivity is right down the middle. It is a dividing line between the halves. At the very left is the people with the least amount and at the very right is the people with the most amount.
The part of the graph where the curve touches the x-axis (the horizontal line) is normally reserved for people who have damage to their brain stem; and more specifically their pineal gland. They have been shut off from the spiritual world. This is a sad state for some individuals.
At the right, where the curve touches the x-axis is normally reserved for people I call “extreme empaths”. These people feel everything. And when I say everything, I mean it. And, unfortunately, these people are often falsely diagnosed with mental disorders, like schizo-affective disorder or the full-blown schizophrenia. To be clear, I am not saying schizophrenia does not exist (it does), I am saying it is sometimes falsely identified.
Where Am I On the Curve?
Likely, you are right in the middle, maybe a little above since you are reading this. You have sensitivity, but not too much. Consider yourself lucky. You have the ability to function as a normal human being while also being able to leave the physical reality behind when needed.
Most people I encounter get it into their heads that they want to experience the full level of spiritual sensitivity. While I understand the desire, the outcome is not what they think it is. For example, you have brightness settings on your TV. Mostly, you do not mess with them. You plug up the old, black mirror and let it do its job. However, one day the sun may be shining a little too bright into your home. So, you fiddle with the settings and accidentally turn the brightness to max. You can’t see anything. The picture is too washed out. It looks like a canvas treated for painting.
That is what the most sensitive to spiritual goings-on feel. They cannot differentiate between the physical and the spiritual any longer.
If you are a Witch or Magick practitioner, you are probably right above the average. That is what I consider the sweet spot.
Can I Increase My Sensitivity?
This is complicated. It is true that you can increase it, but it does come with some caveats.
For some, experiencing the spirituality that they are capable of can lead to a jaded experience. In other words, you get used to the amount you can handle and begin to see it as “not enough”. So, in the end, they believe that their sensitivity is holding them back and they end their practice because it can take years to advance.
For others, they begin on such a low level that advancing seems like nothing is happening. I have had many clients who fall on the low end of the curve and they begin meditating daily. Eventually, they start to experience something, but it feels like it is nothing compared to their expectations.
Increasing it takes time and effort and consistency, which are everyone’s least favorite words. For me, personally, I began as below average, but I worked enough to become somewhat on the higher side. If you were born above average, then great! I would suggest staying there and filling out your practice with divinatory rituals and spiritual communication. There really is no need for more. If you were not born with your third eye open, then I would suggest some Magickal intervention paired with a healthy meditation practice.
How Do I Increase My Sensitivity?
I mentioned meditation and Magickal intervention above, but there are other ways to go about it as well. And that is good news for you meditation haters out there!
Crystals are a god-send for manipulating and boosting your personal energies. Quartz is the most basic and best functioning of the crystals. Having them near you will increase your own personal vibrations, as proven by the piezoelectric effect. This will enhance your own vibrations within your very DNA sub-structure.
You can also take various supplements, like 5-HTP and magnesium, to increase the amount of oxytocin so that your mind is more accepting of spiritual activities. This neuropeptide helps create bonds with others, too. For example, new mothers have more oxytocin in their system than at any other time in their life. That’s why becoming a parent can feel so spiritual.
How Do I Decrease My Sensitivity?
Believe it or not, I get this question a lot. And, when it happens, I feel more sorry for them than I do those who need to increase it. It is far more difficult to decrease this sensitivity than increase it, too. But, if you need to, I will explain a couple things.
Vigorous exercise can help with this. And do not take this as me saying that if you exercise, you will not increase your spiritual sensitivity. I am talking intense exercise, where you can barely move the next day. While I do not recommend this method wholeheartedly as it can sometimes lead to injury, it is an option for the desperate.
Another method is lots of carbohydrates. This tends to make the brain sluggish, which means that the hormones, like oxytocin, have trouble moving through the brain. Other things that can do this are excess cannabis use, benzodiazepines, too much sleep.
Love + Blessings,
Laci
