5 Examples of the Mandela Effect You NEED to See
What is the Mandela Effect?
The Mandela Effect is a creatively named phenomenon where people have memories that do not correspond to current reality.
The naming owes its origins to the “death” of Nelson Mandela. Mandela was South African leader who opposed apartheid, which was a movement that enforced strict segregation of his people. Because of his opposition, Mandela was imprisoned. Some people remember Mandela passing away in prison, while others know he died in 2013 after serving as president of South Africa. This disagreement led to the naming of the Mandela Effect by Fiona Broome.
Timeline manipulation is a hot topic in some Witch-y circles, so I thought I’d educate myself on this so-called effect. These are five of the most surprising examples I found.
Example 1: The Mona Lisa’s Smile
What happened to the old Mona Lisa? I swear she is smiling now!
That is the thought a lot of people have today when remembering seeing the Mona Lisa in their 3rd Grade art books. Sure, there was always the debate as to whether or not she was smiling. But, nowadays, people who previously thought she was expressionless say that she is definitely smiling now.
Example 2: Mainland Attacks on the US During WWII
Most people remember Pearl Harbor, but did you know there was an attack by the Japanese on the US’s Oregon coastline? Don’t worry, I don’t remember that, either. And I know I was never taught this in history class.
The story goes that a Japanese submarine snuck up the Columbia river and parked itself outside Fort Stevens Army Base. After midnight, the submarine shot a total of 17 shells at its target. Thankfully, all of them missed, but it did wipe out a nearby baseball field.
Example 3: The Thinker’s Open Hand
The Thinker had a closed fist on his chin, right?
That’s what I thought, anyway. Now, it seems he is solemnly resting his chin across his fingers. It also doesn’t help that the artist himself, Auguste Rodin, described his statue as having a “clenched fist” in his own description of his work. I can even remember making the closed fist pose myself when I was younger.
Example 4: The North Pole Disappeared
Look, I have been accused of being crazy more than a few times, but I specifically remember there being land (or ice) at the North Pole. Where would Santa live, after all?
Maybe it is confusion with Antarctica, but there are old globes that have a landmass at the northern most part of the globe. Maybe this isn’t a Mandela Effect and maybe it is a poor mapmaker’s fault. Either way, a lot of people have commented that they remember something besides cold, cold water being there, at least.
Example 5: The Lindbergh Baby Was Found
I swear to you, I thought this was a cold case.
If you’re an old Witch like me, you remember the Lindbergh Baby case. And, no, I wasn’t alive in the 1930s. I just remember people talking about it when I was a kid. And, I distinctly remember them talking about how the baby was never found.
If you’re unfamiliar, the Lindberghs were a famous family—specifically the husband, Charles Lindbergh, who was an accomplished pilot who was the first to fly a plane from New York to Paris, France. Sadly, their baby was kidnapped in 1932 and found killed two months later. I will spare you the details of the crime, but I always remember the baby as having never been found.
