5 Common Witchcraft Myths DEBUNKED!

Third (2).png

Misconceptions about Witchcraft and Magick abound. In this blog post, I will be debunking the five most common myths that I hear.

MYTH 1:

You need LOTS and LOTS of training before you start.

If you have practiced for any amount of time, you know this is laughably untrue. And, if you’re just starting, do not listen to the “Witches” that say this.

For whatever reason, some Witches and practitioners like to make Magick and the paranormal sound dangerous. This is a form of gatekeeping and I hate it. If someone is using scare-tactics or fear-mongering, they are more than likely lying to you. Do not trust these people.

If you want to get into Magick, you can start right now. There is no barrier to entry. Obviously, your first spell should not be overly complicated. Start easy, like with this Simple Pentacle Protection Spell.

MYTH 2:

Witchcraft is too expensive to practice these days.

In all honesty, starting a practice could not be cheaper this day and age. And, it couldn’t be easier. Resources are everywhere (including my website 😉) and materials could not be more low-priced.

I even have a blog post titled Witchcraft on a Budget. When I was starting out, I had nothing. No money, no materials, no guidance—NOTHING! I made my first altar by hand by repurposing a small table I bought from a thrift store.

I spent 8 bucks on my first go and I had enough to practice for over a year. Money is no issue these days when it comes to having a healthy practice.

MYTH 3:

You have to come from a long line of Witches to have access to Magick.

No. You don’t.

I have a few Witches in my family, but I am certainly not reliant on my blood to practice. Again, this is another form of gatekeeping some “Witches” like to use. Don’t fall for it!

You can begin your practice at any time, regardless of your ancestry. While Blood Witches may have a leg up at the starting line of their practice, I don’t know any Witch personally who is a Blood Witch. All of them found their practice at a point in their lives where they needed it most.

Do not let your genetics hold you back from your practice.

MYTH 4:

Your altar must be pristine and ready for a photo-shoot.

Oh, if you only knew how my personal altar looked.

I have two places I regularly practice Magick in my home. I have my office, with a small altar I use for personal projects. And I have my altar room, where I cast the spells I do for others as a service. While my altar room is ALWAYS kept clean and organized and perfect, my personal altar is anything but.

Don’t worry about being organized. Your altar is meant for work, not posting pictures online. Do not let others’ judgement of your spiritual space keep you from your practice. Who cares what they think, anyway?

Have a table and you are set. Forget the fancy stuff.

MYTH 5:

You NEED to belong to a coven to be a Witch.

Absolutely untrue.

Being in a coven is a privilege afforded to a few, especially these days. While it is helpful, it is in no way necessary. Most of the Witches I know are solo Witches and I was for a large part of my practice.

NEVER listen to the people who try to place rules on your craft. If you live on the moon in a one-room shack, you can access the power of Witchcraft on your moon-dust floor. You do not need a group of Witches to boost you.

The power is in your hands and yours alone. Use it.

Love + Blessings,

Laci

If you are practicing alone, I urge you to look into the Mysticmagicks Facebook Group. It is full of practicing witches and spirit keepers looking to help others.
